ERCO Eclipse - March 23rd

I rarely get excited about product launches. While I’m always happy to see a factory iterate on an existing product or create something new, a factory rarely launches a product that truly wows me.

ERCO has done that with Eclipse.

I’ll be sending more information in the coming weeks, including links to register for a zoom and a specific time, but in the meantime, please save the date. This is a product demo you will not want to miss.

I’m going to be really honest here. I rarely get excited about product launches. While I’m always happy to see a factory iterate on an existing product or create something new, a factory rarely launches a product that truly wows me.

ERCO has done that with Eclipse.

I was interested after the first couple of teaser videos like the one above. Then the entire SDA team was given a live demonstration from the showroom in Germany demonstrating the various ways you can use Eclipse, similar to the video below.

Eclipse_48V_Tr_US.jpg

ERCO Eclipse

XX Reasons to get excited

Sizes and Outputs

Available in four sizes including a palm-of-your-hand small 2 watt all the way up to a 4000 lumen powerhouse, ERCO has brought every sizing option needed to the US.

Flexibility

With Eclipse, the base spec is just the beginning. By adding up to 3 accessories on top of the optic, you can shift CCT, soften beams, and even create framing projectors with one hand as you work on a ladder.

Customization

Eclipse brings even more specifiable options. Dimming is available via 0-10v, onboard potentiometers, and Casamabi wireless controls. Tunable white and RGBW are both available where dynamic color is required.

March 23rd - A Virtual Demo

We had planned a virtual demo live from the showroom in NJ in the first week of February, then we got snowed out. We’re planning a 1 pm demonstration. Everyone who joins will be getting a special thank you.

Pssst…Here’s a Sneak Peek

Lighting the 5th Room: Triggering Great Habits with Light

When our homes have become everything, we can use lighting to trigger good habits. In this piece, we talk about how mixing layers of light can make your “5th room” everything from the home gym to your place to relax at the end of the day.

Earlier this month, I was asked to take part in a discussion on Lighting The 5th Room as part of the KBIS 2021 Virtual Conference. It was a fun discussion and I wanted to elaborate a little bit on one of the points I made in the presentation.

In the last few years, a lot of research has come out around the science of habit formation. Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit is probably the main text people are familiar with on this subject. He explained the very simple concept of how a habit works. demonstrated here.

Habit Loop.jpg

Essentially a cue triggers a pattern of behavior that leads to a reward.

Change of location is a cue. I go to the gym and it triggers working out. I go to my desk and it triggers opening my email app. I go to my local coffee shop and it triggers reading a book. The environment is crucial to creating a context for habits.

But for many of us in the age of COVID-19 our homes have become everything. They are the gym, the office, the art studio, the reading nook, the coffee bar, and myriad other things. We’ve lost the power of locational context to trigger our more desired behaviors. Home is for relaxing, right? If you’re used to going to the gym, the office, school, the coffee shop and library, you’ve lost many powerful contexts. So what is to be done?

Using Light to Create Good Habit Triggers

One of the easiest ways to create visual triggers in the home is with lighting. While there are awesome convertible pieces of furniture and movable units that realign a space, a simple touch of a button and lighting can transform a space instantly. This is particularly powerful if we’re lighting a multi-use room.

home office

The very basic sketch I have above is modeled after the spare bedroom in my own house, which became the home office/craft area/ occasional home gym. Using this simple space as an example I’m going to walk through how different lighting scenes can trigger different habit sets (or habit stacks if you prefer) and some of the physiological and psychological advantages of the lighting scene. Before we get into the scenes and habit triggers themselves, I want to quickly describe each lighting layer for you. It’s by combining these layers in different intensities that we create different scenes, which triggers the habit(s).

These four simple lighting zones are all imagined as static white (versus tunable) and are simply on dimmers. Now let’s talk about how we trigger habits with light.

Work Mode

work mode.jpg

An open bright space - all work surfaces and overall area lit adding to contribution from natural light.

Physiological/Psychological Benefits: We are at our most alert when we’re in high volumes of light and that light filters toward our eyes (versus straight down) especially with contribution from the sun, this will boost energy and alertness. A full, bright space will engage your mind as much as your body.

How to make it a habit: Trigger this seen with automation via your smart home system. If you know you want to work every day in the home office starting at 9 am, then let the lights coming on at 9am will act as a visual cue daily to get to work.

Focus Mode

focus mode.jpg

This is different from what I called “work mode” because as the name implies, it draws focus downward. The scene minimizes distraction by pulling light down to the desk and the supply closet. Only the essentials to work on a project.

Physiological/Psychological Benefits: When we need to focus, it can be helpful to limit our field of vision. Visual noise pulls focus away from the task at hand.

How to make it a habit: When you decide you need to work on something, put your phone in another room, out of sight, then say, “Alexa/Siri/Google, it’s time to focus.” This mini habit stack sets the table for a good session.

Zoom Mode

zoom.jpg

OK, maybe this one is a little bit less about health and a little more about feeling glamorous in the age of everyday sweatpants. Even in our work-from-home world, it feels good to look our best for the world. This mode combines natural light from the window with ambient warm light from the scones and reduces the downlighting. This gives you complimentary shadowing highlights, no ring lights required.

Physiological/Psychological Benefits: There’s nothing worse than feeling anxious about how you look on camera. Good lighting can help.

How to make it a habit: Make it part of your pre-zoom routine. Lights, camera, action!

Relax Mode

relax.jpg

By bringing in the light from the sides of the room it encourages soft vertical light perfect for lounging in a big chair and making a page glow.

Physiological/Psychological Benefits: Just as we wanted to stimulate alertness with high volumes of light in work mode, by decreasing light levels we’re triggering a more mellow state.

How to make it a habit: Make it a reward. You just finished a work day, the kids are fed, washed and tucked in bed. Make a cup a tea and say, “Hey Siri, it’s time to relax.” Let the lights shift, grab a book and settle in. As as added bonus, you’ll sleep much better if the last thing you’re looking at are the illuminated pages of a glowing book versus the glow of an LED backlit screen.

Additional Enhancements

sweetensuite_image_final.jpg

This is just the basics. Today’s LED fixtures can bring color and warmth and vibrance. There are no limits to what lighting can do to transform your interiors.

Watch: Partnering with Hemera on Your Custom Projects

Not only does Hemera make stunning individual fixtures, but they are also powerful collaborators on custom projects. Adam Doucette and I sit down to talk about this amazing project.

Hemera is a manufacturer we've worked with for years at SDA, but I think I haven't done an excellent job telling their story. So to kick off 2021 I'm going to be doing a series of posts with the Hemera team. The truth is you might have visited their old website and seen some pretty fixtures, but nothing exactly fit the aesthetics of your project, and so you said, “I’ll keep them in mind.” A few months passed and another project came up and you went back to their website, and the same thing happened.

Michigan Plaza Chandelier by Hemera

Well, the team at Hemera has completely redone their website, why is that so important? Beyond making it much easier to navigate, they've gone through some pains to bring their project work to the fore. Hemera is not simply building the 20 or so fixture types you might have seen in the gallery. They are also ready to be your partner for customs and modifications.

Nowhere is that more apparent than Michigan Plaza in Chicago. The project team engaged Hemera from early on in the process and Hemera was a total partner in the design, fabrication, and installation of this beautiful lighting sculpture. Adam Doucette was good enough to join me to discuss Michigan Plaza. We talked about how the project went from a simple quote request to an amazing custom installation.

For NY Apartment Owners and Operators now is the time to refresh your building

It's a wild time in NY. For the first time in more than a decade, NYC rents are falling. At the same time, suburbs are booming again. If you’re designing or developing multi-family or mixed-use buildings, you’re in a fight to attract tenants. Great lighting can make the difference between a building that attracts residents or not.

From the entrance to the apartment's interior, I've curated a collection of products and lines for you to consider on your next multi-family or mixed-use project.

The headlines this summer were badr, rents were falling in New York City.

....Manhattan posted a 3.1 percent drop in rent as of July, the largest year-over-year drop since the Great Recession, when rent fell almost 10 percent...median rents dropping 6 percent compared to last year. And they don’t think this drop will end anytime soon.
— Curbed

StreetEasy predicted that rents would fall further, as demand for NY apartments fall and supply increases, and experts are saying this trend will continue all the way to March 2021. In the month of July, the number of leases signed was down 34% from last year.

But things change in a NY Minute

However, according to CNBC the drop in rent is bring back younger renters.

A big drop in rental prices appears to be luring new, younger renters back to the city, even as office workers and wealthy New Yorkers remain in the suburbs and more rural resort towns. New leases in Manhattan increased 33% in October, making it the best October in 12 years, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samue

The Battle is On For Young Design-Savvy Renters

Not only has demand fallen for an apartment in NYC, but supply is increasing. The latest information we have shows that for the first time in more than a decade, there's no shortage of NYC places to live.

Rental inventory in Manhattan is up a whopping 65 percent in July compared to the previous year, according to StreetEasy, and that number could increase because July and August are the highest months for lease expirations.
— Curbed

So with renters starting to comeback competition is ncreasing, it's time to seriously think about updating apartment buildings to appeal to the people who remain and get ready for the post-pandemic as people begin to return to NYC.

With Upgrades, It’s all About ROI

I get it. When it comes to does aesthetic upgrades, it’s about ROI. It’s not an effective upgrade for you if it’s costly. It about maximizing return on aesthetic investment. The following collection for each category is designed to improve the aesthetics of your building and provide great light without hurting your ability to make a profit.

So let’s start at the beginning…

Make the Entry Welcoming

So many buildings make their entry less that appealing with old light fixtures that hum and buzz. They are bright in all the wrong ways and don't put light where you need it. Simple, beautiful and elegant entry lighting can be a very easy way to refresh the entry of the building.

Refresh the Vestibule

The vestibule of your building is where your residents will wait for their Ubers, where they’ll collect their mail and meet their neighbors. It should feel warm and inviting. Whether the fixtures are mounted directly to the ceiling, or pendant mounted and hanging down a bit; there are lots of simple ways to refresh the vestibule lighting.

Brighten The Hallways and Stairwells

Like curb appeal, the feeling residents and potential residents get for their apartments is often defined by their trip through the building. Give your building an inviting feeling with beautiful surface mounted sconces or ceiling lights.

Downlights and Cylinders

Of course, sometimes what’s required isn’t decorative. Whether your aesthetic is beautiful clean ceilings or more open and exposed style lofts, there is a downlight solution for you.

Security

Of course, sometimes, it’s just about making some areas feel safe and secure. Whether that’s exterior access ways, service entrances, or stairwells. These are just some examples of the basics you can employ to make sure your entire building has solid lighting

Just the Tip of the Iceberg

This is just a small collection of the fixtures I represent that would be perfect for a multi-family or mixed use development. Want to learn more? Let’s book a zoom and chat.

Controls 101

Admit it!

You never got that early education into how dimming works! This primer on lighting controls is aimed at junior lighting designers, architects, and anyone else who feels like they need to get back to basics with lighting control.

Recently one of the designers I work with emailed me. She’s a junior designer at the firm, and while she feels like she’d gotten a grasp on lighting, controls were foreign to her. Most of the project discussions she was a part of jumped right into specific systems and skipped the basics. She asked if anyone had a simple, early guide to lighting control. So I made this presentation. I thought it was a sign of bravery and humility to admit what you didn’t know. After all, if it wasn’t clear to her, I bet that was true for many more young designers. The slide show below is called “Controls 101,” and it’s meant to be an early starting point into dimming systems. If it’s popular, we’ll do more.

Attention Edison Price Specifiers and Customers

Edison Price has long been a storied name in the architectural lighting industry. For many of us, Edison Price taught us what to expect from an architectural luminaire manufacturer. Their recent decline in stature and the news of their sale has saddened so many of us. Fortunately, long time rival Litelab is here to help.

Edison Price has long been a storied name in the architectural lighting industry. For many of us, Edison Price taught us what to expect from an architectural luminaire manufacturer. Their recent decline in stature and the news of their sale has saddened so many of us. Their loss has left lighting designers but also facilities and institutions scrambling to figure out maintenance plans and future specifications.

Litelab Is Here to Help

Litelab has been a longtime competitor to Edison Price, but out of that competition came mutual respect. Each company spurred the other to innovate. So as Edison Price fades, Litelab stands ready to help.

I could write more, but I think the folks at Litelab have crafted a thoughtful response.

EDISON PRICE IS ONE OF LITELAB’S MOST RESPECTED COMPETI- TORS. FOR DECADES, THEIR INNOVATION AND IMAGINATION ENCOURAGED OUR OWN EXPLORATION AND GROWTH AS A COMPA- NY. WE ARE SADDENED TO WITNESS THE CHALLENGES THAT EDISON PRICE AND THE COMMUNITY WHO REGULARLY TURNED TO THEM CURRENTLY FACE.

DUE TO THE SHARED MARKET SPACE THAT LITELAB AND EDISON PRICE HAVE HISTORICALLY OCCUPIED, WE HAVE MAINTAINED A DEGREE OF CONTINUITY AND COMPATIBILITY WITH EDISON PRICE PRODUCTS. THIS HAS ENABLED CLIENTS, INSTITUTIONS AND DESIGNERS TO USE LITELAB FIXTURES INTERCHANGEABLY WITHIN EXISTING EDISON PRICE INFRASTRUCTURES.

MEANWHILE, WE HAVE TAKEN SOME OF THE CONCEPTS ORIGINALLY PIONEERED AT EDISON PRICE IN NEW AND ORIGINAL DIRECTIONS, MAKING CONSTANT IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE YEARS.

THE GOAL OF THIS DOCUMENT IS TO HELP CLIENTS, INSTITUTIONS AND DESIGNERS MAP LITELAB’S OFFERINGS ONTO THOSE OF EDISON PRICE. IT INCLUDES CLEAR DOCUMENTATION OF FIXTURE-TO-FIXTURE COMPARISONS AND COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN EDISON PRICE’S AND LITELAB’S TRACK, BUS AND FITTERS. WHERE THERE IS NO DIRECT ONE-TO-ONE COMPARISON OR COMPATIBILITY AVAILABLE, WE ARE WILLING TO HELP CREATE ONE. LITELAB IS DRIVEN BY A SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION; WE PRIDE

OURSELVES ON OUR CAPACITY TO LISTEN TO AND IMPLEMENT THE DESIGN IDEAS OF THE COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE.

THANK YOU.

Litelab has created a helpful comparison and compatibility sheet for Edison Price products. This is meant to aid on current projects and specifications. Kitchen Island Lighting Ideas

Kitchen islands operate as the centerpiece of the kitchen where food is prepared, breakfast is eaten, and guests are entertained. If your family has at least one cook, the center island is often the thriving heartbeat of the home where all the significant conversations happen, and the family can come together. So from a design perspective, kitchen islands have to be both highly functional, but the light should also convey a sense of warmth and invitation. Let’s explore some ideas for kitchen island lighting.

When I surf Pinterest and Instagram, I see a lot of glamorous kitchens with amazing products and finishes. Of course, it’s the internet, so all of these kitchens are beautifully sunbathed with zero artificial light. Beautiful pendants are just hanging there as stunning decorations, not actual luminaires because Pinterest.

But we all know when the sun goes down, and it’s time to actually live in these kitchens the recessed cans go on. Those gorgeous cabinets get scalloped with too many lights too close to them, the sink is dark, and the under cabinet lights make the once amazing stone countertops look like they are covered in phosphorescent pearls, as they reflect back the poorly chosen under cabinet lights.

It’s time to light kitchens as beautifully as you have chosen the cabinet finishes and countertops. It’s time to make sure the light is working with your design instead of against it to create amazing spaces. For this little series on kitchen lighting, I’ve decided to work from the center out. We’ll get into how to handle recessed lighting for the room soon, but for this piece, I want to start with how to light the kitchen island.

The Tricky Island

Hemera Lighting - Pure Micro

Hemera Lighting - Pure Micro

Kitchen islands can vary in so many ways, but most bring together form and function. They operate as the centerpiece of the kitchen where food is prepared, breakfast is eaten, and guests are entertained. If your client is a family with at least one cook, the center island is often the thriving heartbeat of the home where all the significant conversations happen, and the family can come together. So from a design perspective, kitchen islands have to be both highly functional, but the light should also convey a sense of warmth and invitation.

The most common issue I find when it comes to kitchen island lighting is that it’s usually ONLY lit by pendant hung decorative lighting fixtures. The fixtures are often not bright enough to provide functional light for cooking and eating, so a brighter light bulb is put in. Then it’s too harsh and overpowers the room. Like any other feature or area of the home, it needs layers of light.

The Pendant

kitchen_Island 2.jpg

I’m all for glorious, beautiful, easy to clean pendants over kitchen islands. I really only have a few rules about kitchen island pendants.

  1. They must be omnidirectional when it comes to light. (More on that in a second)

  2. They should be no cooler in CCT than 3000K

  3. They should hang at least 6-1/2 feet off the floor.

Omnidirectional

Modernforms Cosmic

Modernforms Cosmic

Take a look at the sketch. From a lighting perspective, the reason I want an omnidirectional pendant over the kitchen island is that usually, these pieces are in the center of the room. Casting a soft light in all directions will do a few things:

·       Light faces – we are invited to spaces that light people’s faces softly.

·       Light the rest of the room – this is the great “shadow killer” removing any harshness from the recessed downlights

·       Soften the space - Kitchens tend to be very linear in their forms and feel. An omnidirectional center light source will soften all those edges.

No Cooler than 3000K

I used to be very preference-based when it came to CCT, recommending that designers ask their clients what they like. I’ve learned most clients don’t know what they want. When I do residential lighting, I aim for 2700K. Nothing cooler than 3000K. Someday I will write a longer post on color and light, but there’s already been so much written about it. For now, just trust me on this.

At least 6’-6” off the floor

This one might be controversial. I’ll put in a caveat here that maybe maybe they can be lower if they are smaller. I just have a personal pet peeve about standing at a kitchen island and looking through some immovable object when I’m trying to talk to someone. I’m not that tall, and often enough, I feel like I’m blocked by low hanging light fixtures.

Downlights

kitchen_Island 3.jpg
USAI BeveLED Mini

USAI BeveLED Mini

It’s hard to write about downlights for the kitchen island without going off into a whole thing about downlights in general. I might have to write that piece (hey, if you want that piece, email me and let me know), but until then, I’m going to assume some basics are understood about recessed downlights. Here are the rules of downlighting the kitchen island.

  1. You need more than one.

  2. It needs to have real optics

  3. The aperture should be no larger than 4.”

  4. It needs to have a lens.

More than one.

One downlight is a disaster, always - funky shadows and weird layouts. Don’t do it. So what should you do? See the last section on layout.

The downlight needs to have real optics.

Don’t let your electrician go to the big box store and purchase a can you stick a light bulb in. Performance downlights have optics. Usually, a reflector that controls the light coming out of the LED into a cone. This is important because instead of getting a big bright spot on your ceiling, you actually drive the view to the target that needs it. In this case, you guessed it, that target is top of the island.

The aperture should be no larger than 4”

If anyone is suggesting a downlight with an aperture size larger than 4” they haven’t been looking. 3” is generally what I recommend in residential applications. The small aperture means you’re less likely to see the flash of the opening and makes for a quieter ceiling.

Last thing, it has to have a lens.

For residential applications, I almost always recommend a lens at the aperture of the downlight. It softens the effect of the light at the ceiling line and the beam itself on the target, making the entire effect softer and more inviting. There are certain very narrow aperture downlights where it might not be appropriate to have a lens, but for the most part, a lens is appropriate.

The Layout

kitchen_Island.jpg

In short, alternate your downlights and pendants over the island. See the simple sketch below.

With this simple layer of light you’ll create an island that is both inviting and functional. It all comes down to the details when it comes to getting a lighting spec just right. Have questions? Email me!

Three Key Products from Senso

One of the first shed videos I did at the start of the COVID-19 shutdown was about Senso. After the acquisition by Luminii, I got to know this factory (which admittedly, I didn't know much about), and I was blown away by their capabilities. I've written about Senso before. I remain impressed by the quality of their product and their ability to adapt and modify products to meet the project's needs.

Leto 11

LETO-11-MINI-P-UD-thumbnail-2.jpg

This versatile family of cylinders comes in a variety of sizes and mounts. With its various optics lumen outputs, it truly can become a design workhorse cylinder.

Artemis 3

artemis-3-dowsnlight-black-under-warm-light.jpg
Louis-dryfuss.jpg

The Artemis line uses the same faceted reflector as the Leto and creates very quiet ceilings by tucking the LED source deep within the aperture. This downlight family offers unique characteristics, including a 2500K option, up to 3000 lumens delivered, and honeycomb louvers. Taken with the Leto family, these can provide a and optically tranquil opportunity for conditions requiring a recessed option.

Dao is a recessed linear profile for drywall ceilings. It offers a couple of really nice design features, including the option for a black lens, tunable white and RGB color, and static CCT as low are 2200K. It's a stunning linear option with the potential to fit into the hospitality and residential markets easily.
