More on Alto
If you design for healthcare, correctional, or other specialty environments, Certolux is a name you should have firmly on your radar.
Certolux is a Leviton lighting brand within the Viscor family that specializes in high-function, high-reliability luminaires for hospitals, schools, correctional facilities, and other demanding applications. While they’ve long served as an OEM partner for major manufacturers like Cooper, Coronet, and Kenall, Certolux is now stepping forward as a standalone brand offering purpose-built solutions in healthcare lighting, vandal-resistant lighting, and other performance-driven categories.
One of the most talked-about products in their lineup is the ALTO Troffer — a fixture that goes beyond just being another high-performance troffer. ALTO is designed as a family of solutions for modern healthcare environments, combining performance, functionality, and aesthetics in a way that feels refreshingly intentional.
What Makes the ALTO Troffer Different?
The first thing you notice about ALTO is the design. Unlike traditional flat troffers, ALTO features a soft, sculpted form where the light visually falls away at the corners. This creates the sense of a soft, open portal in the ceiling rather than a standard, utilitarian panel. In environments where patient comfort and visual calm matter, that subtle difference makes a meaningful impact.
The ALTO design is available in multiple shapes:
Round
Square
Square with softened or rounded corners (as shown in the featured version)
This flexibility allows designers to maintain a cohesive ceiling aesthetic across different spaces while adapting to the visual language of the project.
Sizes, Output & Configurations
The ALTO Troffer is available in several form factors to match a wide range of applications:
1×4
2×2 — up to 5,000 lumens
2×4 — up to 7,000 lumens
The standard ALTO is suitable for use anywhere you’d typically specify a commercial troffer — from corridors and stations to non-clinical areas in healthcare facilities.
For clinical environments, Certolux also offers a medical-grade version of ALTO, purpose-built for patient rooms and care areas. This flexibility allows specifiers to maintain visual consistency across an entire floor or building while tailoring performance and functionality for specific use cases.
ALTO MD-2: Designed for Patient Room Lighting
The ALTO MD-2 version is where the fixture truly becomes a healthcare system solution rather than just a troffer.
Designed specifically for patient rooms, the MD-2 integrates multiple lighting functions into a single platform using low-voltage switching, similar to traditional over-bed patient room lighting systems. It supports:
Ambient lighting
Exam mode lighting
Dedicated reading light
Night light functions in both white and amber
The inclusion of amber night lighting is particularly important in patient environments, as it helps support nighttime navigation while minimizing disruption to circadian rhythms.
By using the same ALTO design language in both the standard and MD-2 versions, designers can maintain a consistent ceiling aesthetic across patient rooms, corridors, and adjacent spaces — without compromising on clinical functionality.
A Broader Healthcare Lighting Ecosystem
While ALTO is a standout product, it’s just one of many solutions Certolux offers for healthcare lighting. From high-abuse environments to controlled clean spaces, their portfolio continues to expand into a full ecosystem of performance-driven luminaires built around real-world healthcare needs.
As healthcare lighting design continues to evolve beyond pure functionality and toward patient-centered environments, solutions like ALTO represent a clear shift in how we think about troffers — not as background fixtures, but as integrated architectural elements supporting both performance and experience.
