Cree's Cadiant LED Skylight
Too often, we talk about human-centric lighting in (ironically enough) in terms of the technical. How much “circadian blue” are we hitting people’s retinas with at a given hour of the day? The Cadiant system answers a more fundamental question, how do we bring the outside in? How do we make people feel better? Aesthetics matter in this regard. That’s why I love the design of this piece.
Quick Explainer on Luminii Kurba
I get some questions on Luminii’s Kurba, so I thought I’d do a quick explainer video.
SDA Now Represents Viscor - Your Next Project Partner
Trying to lock Viscor into one category is basically impossible. They make workhorse fixtures, architectural pieces, dead customs, and quick ship back of house fixtures. Five Minutes with ALW Core and Qube
When ALW acquired V2, they pulled in a respected name in specification lighting. At the heart of that respect are the Core and Qube cylinders. It isn't easy to separate yourself from the pack of lighting manufacturers, but I think ALW has done it with these products. In this five minute video, I'll go over Core and Qube's essential features, light up a demo unit, and discuss some of the customizable options.
Design Comes First with Beta Calco - That's Why I'm So Excited.
The fresh emphasis on design has been a bright spot of the pandemic. That’s why I’m so excited to have Beta Calco joining the SDA World of Light.

Insight Lighting offers a unique take on the line of light with Space. This direct/indirect linear pendant is a fresh take on the line of light. With the uniquity of the line of light, anything we can do to make it feel more special is a good thing.
Embrace Negative Space with Two New Forms from Coronet
When dropped ceilings were main design statement, the default mode was the 2x2 and 2x4 troffer. Now that open ceilings and exposed mechanical gear is the trendy aesthetic, we see more suspended lines of light in our spaces, so much so it’s become the default for so many offices, healthcare and hospitality environments. But we can always do better and always create more inspiring environments.
Attention Edison Price Specifiers and Customers
Edison Price has long been a storied name in the architectural lighting industry. For many of us, Edison Price taught us what to expect from an architectural luminaire manufacturer. Their recent decline in stature and the news of their sale has saddened so many of us. Fortunately, long time rival Litelab is here to help.

The 2” aperture has remained a tricky one to pull off. Generally, you’re either compromising performance or dealing with the added expense, which puts the fixture out of reach. With their new 2DR and 2AR series, HE Williams has tried to strike a balance.

The Slow Return to Normal-ish
While we might not be ready to get back to work as normal. We can return normal-ish. With LEDucation going virtual, and no other trade events happening in the area through the end of the year, it's time to think about how we can keep your designs fresh with new products and options. Whether that means booking a hybrid presentation, home delivery of a sample, or a zoom call, I'm here to keep you going.
For those who remain: OPEN a night walk by The Flint Collective
“OPEN” is a series of temporary light art installations occupying a selection of storefronts in the East Village. Visitors are invited to discover the neighborhood anew via a mapped out night walk. The walk links both empty and occupied storefronts transformed through a mix of light projections and radiant effusions of color. Sponsored by the Designers Lighting Forum of New York (DLFNY), the Flint Collective NYC partnered with lighting manufacturers and local business owners to respond to a city transformed by the global pandemic. In the rhythm of closed storefronts OPEN offers an optimistic pause of light and color.
Kitchen Island Lighting Ideas
Kitchen islands operate as the centerpiece of the kitchen where food is prepared, breakfast is eaten, and guests are entertained. If your family has at least one cook, the center island is often the thriving heartbeat of the home where all the significant conversations happen, and the family can come together. So from a design perspective, kitchen islands have to be both highly functional, but the light should also convey a sense of warmth and invitation. Let’s explore some ideas for kitchen island lighting.
Updating Delivered Lumens
If there's been a theme to 2020, it's been - adaptation. It's become a trope to harp on the uncertainty ahead I won't indulge that impulse. Instead, let's talk about what was already happening and what COVID-19 is accelerating. I started Delivered Lumens about 18 months ago because it was already challenging to find time in the schedule to make in-person presentations. Billable hours are valuable; there are more products and frankly, more reps than ever in the NY market vying for your time. Delivered Lumens was set up as a way to keep having the lighting conversation on your schedule.
