AIA: Lighting Technologies in the Age of LED

Lighting upgrades in the age of LEDs has brought a range of opportunities for the well-intentioned to go quickly astray. Whether you’re planning to replace equipment for energy savings, operational improvements, or take advantage of a new technology there are a lot of factors one must consider when evaluating different products. This presentation will cover the different LED options available for cultural projects including replacement lamps and integrated LED fixtures, evaluating output beyond watts and lumens, what LED life ratings really say about performance, how to evaluate white light sources, and provide an overview of smart lighting tools including Casambi Bluetooth controls.

AIA: Acetylated Wood: Durable, Stable, Sustainable Wood

Accoya wood recently completed the qualification process for its online continuing education course titled Acetylated Wood: Durable, Stable, Sustainable Wood for Windows, Doors and Siding. The course qualifies for one learning unit HSW/SD through AIA and one GBCI CE hour for LEED professionals through USGBC.

The program outlines the process of wood acetylation, comparing and contrasting the improvements of acetylated wood over other methods of preserving wood and other timbers. It also compares the durability, dimensional stability, coatings performance and environmental benefits of acetylated wood versus other treated timbers and species.

AIA: Light and Us an inspirational exploration of our evolution under Light, Biophilic and WELL Design Presented By Lightglass

During the course of human evolution exposure to natural lighting has conditioned neurological stimuli that regulate numerous biological functions.

Circadian Rhythm, rooted in the Latin for “around the day”, is a term describing the entrained cyclical processes used to sustain most living organisms. The changing spectral distribution characteristics of the sun and the onset of night have been a key influence on how the retina has evolved to become a primary source of sensory stimulus effecting the production and inhibition of hormones essential to Circadian balance.

Disruption of Circadian Rhythm (our natural cycles) can have deleterious effects on our health and wellbeing, particularly our patterns of sleep.

Many of our built environments have created unnatural conditions for its occupants. Research has shown that poor illumination, of the spaces we occupy, can contribute to the disruption of our natural cycles. With the advent of Solid-State Lighting (LED) and “nature emulating design” we can transform the environments that we occupy. This course explores ways of applying “Circadian Balanced IlluminationTM, Biophilic Design and WELL Building lighting principles to invigorate the human condition and benefit our cognition, health and wellbeing.

The course is approved for AIA Health, Safety and Welfare CEU, CLD, IIDA and NCQLP LC CEU.

George C Bosson MA, IES, IALD/LIRC founder of a.light Architectural Lighting will present the course. George has been an executive in Architectural Lighting for over 30 years, including elliptipar, LAM Lighting, now Chief Spiritual Office of LIGHTGLASS Lighting. He has been recognized by the IES as an innovator in lighting development and has received the numerous design awards including the Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum and Product of the year from Interior Design magazine.

AIA: Integration, Integration, Integration: The three most important aspects of lighting, and how to master them

Here are the learning objectives of this course:

1. An understanding of available options when considering lighting within a space.
2. To develop through a structured approach, a strategy for delivering light.
3. To develop a working knowledge of integrated lighting details to support the strategy implementation.
4. A review of relevant real world examples.

After attending this one-hour presentation, you’ll earn three learning units to apply toward your annual AIA continuing education requirement.

Presented By Sean McClosky of Inter-Lux.
