Hue Drenching is a Color Trend of 2026 - Here’s how to light it
As someone who loves color in design, I was very excited to see the idea of color drenching, and now its sister trend, hue-drenching, has taken off. I love the boldness of this trend, but it takes thoughtful lighting to pull it off.
First, let’s start with a brief description:
The beauty of hue drenching is that it's more than a paint idea; it's up to you how far you take it. Whether it's layering warm brown throw pillows on a chocolate brown sofa or tying your rug in with your wallpaper, it's a look that doesn't strive for coordination, but rather, common ground.
'Hue-drenching harks back to quite a traditional aesthetic,' shares interior designer Caroline Riddell. 'Consequently, it has its place in both a contemporary and classic interior. We think it will last the test of time!'
Bold punches of color and all of their hues need careful lighting attention.
How to light for hue drenching
If this is the design direction you’re choosing for a space, then the first thing is to invest in high-quality light sources. These should be 90+ CRI and binned within 1 SDMC (a measurement of LED color consistency). The consistency here is absolutely critical - when you’re considering subtle shifts in color, you want the materials chosen to create those subtle shifts, not a color shift from the LED sources themselves. Tight binning matters.
Create layers of light that accentuate the tones. Gentle wall washes, art accent lighting, and curtain warmers are all ways to bring the hue variations to life in light. If you want to really punch up this effect, zone each lighting gesture separately so you can control which layers of light take prominence in the space. Your decorative lighting needs to remain understated in these spaces. Softness of light is your friend here.
Who knows how long hue-drenching will be a thing? The good news is selecting high-quality, consistent light sources never goes out of style. So if the room goes back to beige, at least you’ll have fabulous lighting to play with.
